Web Quests are student centered and inquiry based studies presented through a series of web pages.
By creating an engaging narrative Web Quests are meant to motivate students through the learning process, making the learning experience stronger and longer lasting.
A Web Quests provide links for the student to access information on the topic directly instead of searching the vastness of the Internet.
I designed this Web Quest after a 4th grade teacher came to me and said they wanted to have their students make a presentation on what an animal needed to live. Ten-year-olds are still excited by animals and getting on the Internet to find pictures. I thought the "hook" of becoming a parent might motivate them even more. Though made with a 4th grade class in mind this can absolutely be adapted to 2nd, 3rd, or 5th grade. The presentation aspect of this lesson ties in two of the most important technology skills students today need: Internet Research & Multimedia Presentations.

This is a great site for teachers who are looking for Web Quests on the Internet but aren’t sure what they should use to evaluate the educational content of the site: http://webquest.sdsu.edu/webquestwebquest-es.html

Here’s a site that will help a teacher organize their creation of a Web Quest. Remember, teachers at P.S. 11 can use the eChalk site to host the Web Quest they create: http://www.spa3.k12.sc.us/WebQuestTemplate/webquesttemp.htm

This site is hosted by the University of San Diego and maintained by the person who invented Web Quests. It is very extensive and full of lots of great stuff. http://webquest.sdsu.edu/webquest.html

Mr. Fier is a computer teacher / technology coordinator for a elementary public school in New York City. In my 6th year at P.S. 11 I have been exploring the use of Web Quests as way to motivate and engage students in learning across the curriculum while using the amazing tools of technology.
